Area highlights

The Seto Inland Sea is Japan’s largest archipelago, stretched across approximately 450km (280miles) from east to west. Island-hopping from one end to the other takes about a week. Wondering where to start your cruise journey? We’ve divided the region into four smaller areas and listed some of the highlights below.

Hiroshima Area

This area is particularly popular among international visitors. It is home to the Atomic Bomb Dome and Miyajima, both of which are World Heritage Sites.
With over 20 inhabited islands in the surrounding area, it has served as a channel to the world since ancient times.

Hiroshima is also known for having the highest oyster production in Japan, and an oyster festival is held every weekend from January to March. 'Oyster grilling', where oysters with shells are grilled on a hot plate, is a distinct winter tradition in this region.

Miyajima・Itsukushima Shrine

Miyajima・Itsukushima Shrine

Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima is famous for its large torii gate built on the sea. The shrine was built around 1168 on the outskirts of the island, because the islands itself has been the subject of worship since ancient times. Once on the island the wild deer will greet you, and you can enjoy a stroll along the Omotesando Arcade, a vibrant shopping street leading up to the shrine lined with stores serving local delicacies.(the Taka-butai stage is currently undergoing construction as of June 2024)

SIMOSE ART MUSEUM

SIMOSE ART MUSEUM

This museum features the architecture created by Japan's world-famous architect, Shigeru Ban. It was named one of "The World's Most Beautiful Museums" in the 2024 list of the Prix Versailles architectural award established by UNESCO.

Saijo Sake Brewery Street

Saijo Sake Brewery Street

Saijo, Hiroshima, is renowned as one of the top three places of sake production in Japan. The picturesque streets are adorned with seven sake breweries, making it a sought-after spot for sake enthusiasts from both Japan and abroad. Enjoy sake tastings at the breweries and indulge in local delicacies like the "Bishu-nabe," the literal translation being "beautiful sake hot pot."

If you want to eat like the locals, try this Hiroshima specialty and comfort food. Okonomiyaki is a savory pancake typically layered with noodles, fried egg, cabbage, pork, and a delicious sauce.

Shimanami Area

Enjoy nature, culture, and food in Shimanami, Japan's cycling mecca. The mild climate of this area is ideal for citrus farming, making it the country's leading producer of lemons. Citrus-infused gelato and desserts are especially popular. Visitors are also drawn to the Zen experience in a stunning traditional Japanese garden.

The Shimanami Kaido is a unique sea route for cyclists, stretching over 70 kilometers across 6 islands and 7 bridges. As you pedal through the diverse islands, you can enjoy local delicacies and explore the story of each island. Along the way, you will come across 150 "Cycle Oases," which are volunteer-operated rest stops providing free amenities such as restrooms, air pumps, and water. The local hospitality towards cyclists adds to its widespread appeal.

Oyamazumi Shrine

Oyamazumi Shrine

Oyamazumi Shrine on Omishima is a prominent shrine in the Seto Inland Sea with a history of 1,300 years. Alongside Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima, it is dedicated to the gods of the sea and has been deeply revered by sailors and those in maritime industries. Also known as a deity of victory in battle, the shrine houses Japan's largest collection of armor and swords in its treasure hall. A must-see is the national treasure, a thousand-year-old suit of armor. The collection also includes rare armor said to have been worn by women.

Onomichi Ramen

Onomichi Ramen

A local ramen that originated over 80 years ago in Onomichi City, Hiroshima, features a soy-based soup with broth made from chicken bones and small fish. Another unique characteristic of this ramen is the topping of soft minced pork back fat, which enhances the light broth with a rich flavor. There are over 30 ramen shops around JR Onomichi Station where you can try this specialty.

Okayama & Kagawa Area

This area is dotted with numerous islands, large and small. Visitors can enjoy island hopping, making stops at each island to experience the stunning scenery and rich history and culture.

Naoshima, a contemporary art haven, Teshima, where nature and art blend seamlessly, and Inujima, an island of modern industrial heritage revitalized through art, attracts many international visitors.

Shishijima

Find a 1,200-year-old camphor tree standing along the way as you walk up the hiking trail and head towards the observatory built by the islanders on Shishijima. The scenic view of the port town and its rich natural surroundings will have you feeling lost in time.

Seto Ohashi Bridge

The Seto Ohashi Bridge is an architectural marvel, stretching over the Seto Inland Sea to connect Honshu (mainland Japan) and Shikoku. Oysters are a must-try in the Seto Inland Sea. Ride a fishing boat to an oyster farm on Kitagishima and taste freshly picked oysters. These highly-regarded "Emperor Oysters" are exported fresh throughout the year. Experience the secret of their deliciousness for yourself.

Kobe & Osaka Area

This area serves as the eastern gateway to the Seto Inland Sea, with Kansai Airport and Kobe Airport along Osaka Bay.
Kobe is renowned for its stunning "10 million-dollar nightscape" and bay area dotted with numerous tourist attractions.

One of the highlights of this area is its reputation as a food lover's paradise, with Kobe beef and Nadagogo, another one of the top three places of sake production in Japan. Visitors can enjoy both the excitement of the city and the beauty of its abundant natural surroundings.

Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle is often referred to as the "White Heron Castle" for its white walls and resemblance to a white heron taking flight. This national treasure has a history of over 400 years and is renowned as a masterpiece of wooden architecture. It was the first in Japan to be registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site, attracting attention from around the world. It is also a beloved spot for cherry blossom viewing in the spring.

神戸牛

Kobe Beef

The world-famous "Kobe Beef" originates from Hyogo Prefecture. The purebred Japanese black cattle "Tajima Beef" has been protected for over a century, and it is the only breed in Japan that has not been crossbred with cattle from other regions. Of these, only the highest class cattle that pass strict inspections are entitled to the name "Kobe Beef." Savor this rare beef, with only about 6,000 cattle produced each year, in its place of origin.
